Whether we like it or not, our life will always move in the direction of our strongest thoughts.
Most of life’s battles, struggles and challenges will start and play out in our mind.
"As a man thinks in is heart so is he." Proverbs 23:7
Why does it matter what we think?
God has created us in a way that our life is built upon what the Bible calls habits/disciplines. Habits and disciplines that are built into our life that eventually become automatic and hopefully, if they are good ones, will move us toward God’s purpose for our life.
This is obvious with skills like driving a car. When we are learning a new skill we have to concentrate and focus. Over time it becomes much easier till it is automatic. God has designed us so that the same thing occurs in our mind. Our thinking. Psychologist tell us when we think certain things regularly we develop neural pathways (or thinking habits) and they affect our behaviour and emotions.
An example is when you can see a person you know from your past and it can cause an immediate physical reaction. Maybe it was a school principal or old sporting coach. You begin to feel like that 10 year old again and may even behave differently around them. You go back to an established pattern.
Those pathways will determine our reactions, behaviour and our decisions and therefore our destiny.
What’s God Answer?
The only way to change the behaviour is to change the belief system behind it.
Psychologists call it developing new neural pathways. The Bible says you need to renew your mind.
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2
How is our life transformed, changed and made better? How do we see the promises we read in the Bible becoming real in our life? By changing what we think and what we believe.
Take Your Thoughts Captive
Living by faith is a decision. A decision to believe what God says, as opposed to the lies that have become the path of least resistance.
What are some of these lies?
- You can’t trust people
- God doesn’t really love you
- God couldn’t forgive you
- He doesn’t care about your life
- God won’t hear your prayer
- This is all you deserve
- You’re always going to be hurting
- You can’t have real intimacy
Paul says to enjoy the life God has offered in his son Jesus we have to demolish, pull down and destroy these erroneous strongholds in our mind. This is not easy. It’s called a stronghold because it has a stronghold.
2 Corinthians 10:5 says that through believing and declaring God’s word instead of the lie, ‘we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ’.
As we continue to do this, our transformation takes place. First on the inside, then on the outside.
