The Holy Spirit and freedom are often found together in Scripture. Take these verses:
'For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.' - Romans 8:2 (NKJV)
'Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.' - 2 Corinthians 3:17 (NKJV)
Jesus brings the message of freedom to set those who are captive free. While he was here on Earth, He promised that he would be our provider.
Not only did Jesus heal people of many diseases, but he also healed people of internal sicknesses and wounds. He heals broken hearts (Psalm 147:3).
Luke 4:18-19 tells us how Jesus has come to bring freedom:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
Luke 4:18-19 (NKJV)
This Scripture highlights three levels of bondage and three levels of freedom that Jesus introduces:
1. Liberty to the captives
When we are captive we are unable to break free from something within us. This can be thoughts, emotions, attitudes, memories or even feelings.
2. Liberty to those who are oppressed
This is when you feel there is an outside force that is an atmosphere that oppresses you. It's your spiritual environment.
3. To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord
This is the year of Jubilee, when all the slaves in Israel were set free and debts were wiped.
When the Word of God is spoken, it will happen. The power of the Word of God cannot ever be underestimated - we simply speak the Word over a person or situation and signs and wonders will follow.
Throughout Scripture, the power of the Holy Spirit is released and miracles happen time and time again simply through the Word of the Lord being spoken;
Mark 7:34-35 - 'He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”). At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.'
Luke 13:12-13 - 'But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her, “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.” And He laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.'
Mark 10:52 - 'Then Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road.'
Matthew 12:13 - 'Then He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and it was restored as whole as the other.'
Mark 4:39 - 'Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.'
